Every fee between the marketplace and your bank

Payoneer sits closer to the plumbing of freelance work than almost any other service: it's the payout rail behind hundreds of marketplaces and the receiving-account provider millions of freelancers lean on. Its fee sheet, though, has three distinct layers — getting paid in, holding, and getting out — and the third one is where the real costs live.

Ask a freelancer how much Payoneer costs and you'll hear "it's free." Ask again, carefully, and the picture gets more interesting. Receiving money into Payoneer is indeed often free. But money in an account isn't money in your pocket — and the path from Payoneer balance to your local bank account is where conversion spreads and withdrawal fees quietly collect their share. This guide walks the full journey.

Layer 1: Getting paid in

Payoneer issues you receiving accounts in major currencies — a US account number, European IBAN, and so on. When a marketplace like Amazon, Upwork or Fiverr pays out to those details, the money lands in your Payoneer balance at little to no cost. This integration is Payoneer's core business and its biggest advantage: if your income comes from platforms, Payoneer is often simply the rail they've chosen.

Direct clients are different. Through Payoneer's request-a-payment flow, a client can settle your invoice from their bank or card. Funding method changes the cost materially: ACH-style bank debits historically run around 1%, while card payments cost substantially more — often in the neighborhood of 3%. If you bill direct clients through Payoneer, nudging them toward the bank-transfer option saves meaningful money on every invoice.

Layer 2: Holding and converting inside the wallet

Money sitting in your Payoneer balance can be converted between currencies at a spread over the mid-market rate. Historically that spread has ranged widely — from under 1% on competitive corridors to several percent on others — and it's the least visible part of the fee sheet because it's expressed as a rate, not a fee. Before converting manually, compare the offered rate to the live mid-market rate; our FX spread inspector shows you exactly how far off the real rate any provider is.

Layer 3: Withdrawal to your bank

Withdrawing to a local bank account in the same currency as the balance is cheap — typically a small flat fee. Withdrawing to a bank in a different currency triggers conversion at withdrawal time, and that's where the spread from Layer 2 attaches itself to your entire balance. A freelancer in India receiving USD and withdrawing INR pays the USD→INR conversion rate Payoneer offers, which is rarely the rate on Reuters.

Two more items complete the sheet:

  • Inactivity fee: accounts with no transaction for 12 months are charged a monthly fee (historically $29.95) until the balance drains or activity resumes.
  • Payoneer cards: spending directly from the balance has its own pricing, occasionally cheaper than withdrawing first — worth checking per corridor.

A worked example: $2,000 marketplace payout

Suppose a marketplace pays $2,000 into your USD receiving account — free. You withdraw to a non-USD bank account. If the effective conversion runs about 0.9% off mid-market plus a small withdrawal fee, you're losing roughly $18–$22 on the round trip, landing around $1,978–$1,982. Modest — and dramatically better than a card gateway's 6% — but on $10,000/month of payouts, that same spread is $90–$110 monthly. Whether Payoneer or Wise wins your corridor depends on exactly these numbers; model both in the forward calculator before committing.

Where Payoneer fits

Payoneer's strength is involuntary: if your marketplaces pay through it, you don't choose it, you optimize within it — withdraw less frequently, keep balances in the currency your bank speaks, prefer ACH funding for direct clients. Where you do get to choose — direct client relationships — compare against Wise's fee structure and the broader landscape in the complete gateway fee guide, and see how the Indian cross-border surcharge reshuffles rankings in invoicing USD from India. Fee schedules change; treat every number here as directional and confirm against Payoneer's official pricing page before routing serious money.
